For people my age, there will always be a special place in our musical hearts for Silverchair. We group up when they did and have seen them progress from the post-grunge excesses of the mid 90s to assured musicians still with a full tank of fuel in them.
Even my father now admits he was a tad hasty in dismissing the group 8 years ago. In fact on first listen, he gave 'Diorama' the thumbs up, but then has anyone given it a bad review?
Confidence is what sums up their fourth album. Daniel Johns sounds more assured in his voice and lyrics, no doubt credited to him finding his happy muse (Anyone who reads trashy tabloids knows what I'm on about). Like Neon Ballroom, the album opens with a grand epic in the form of 'Across the Night' with the assistance of legendary arranger Van Dyke Parks (U2, Beach Boys). 'The Greatest View', the radio-saturated first single, kick starts the more rocking tracks that include 'One Way Mule', that highlights Chris and Ben's solid rhythm section, and 'The Lever'.
However the album is dominated by the maturing song structures that Johns is producing, with virtual fourth member Paul Mac helping to flesh them out on piano. Songs like 'Luv Your Life' and 'My Favourite Thing' are obvious benefits showcasing Daniel's developing vocal range.
When you thought it didn't get any better, the closer 'After All These Years' bookends the past 8 years with some dignity. The scary thing is that their best is still to come.
