Foo Fighters - One by One Review

Artist: Foo Fighters
Album Title: One By One
Label: BMG
Bones:
Summary: Better rock pedigree than even the White Stripes love child
Reviewed By: Sparticus

Oooh baby rock is back. Chunky E power chords laughing in the face of existence for the top four strings. Anxious, persuasive openings, one by one, hidden up their sleeves, falling satisfyingly into place like big phat chunks of foo. Foo like this only comes from a diet rich in essential musical fibre. Yell at us David Grohl. You're angry at something respectable and you're not afraid to tell us so in no uncertain terms. Yell baby. Play that guitar. Growl.

Not that rock ever went anywhere of course. It's just that for the better part of a decade is just hasn't had the fortified foo pedigree.

I'm sure it's been said before that when David was sitting behind the drum kit in Nirvana he must have been taking some pretty good notes. Scribbling away. Filing for future reference, you know the deal But there's so much about Foo that is so completely different from Nirvana it's not really fair to give David an apprentice tag. It's not like he's trying to live out some legacy. He writes love songs all the time. He only yells when it's really necessary and he doesn't look like he's going to drop of his perch of despair in the next five minutes and he doesn't sing like he's been eating asphalt.

"It's times like these we learn to live again. It's times like these you learn to love again. Time and time again."

That's it David, soldier on. You'll be OK mate. Tomorrow's another day.

And he's so cool too. Even his drummer looks like Robert Redford out of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with his little moustache. He's cool too. He used to play drums with Alannis Morrisette, she was cool.

One By One as an album is a real doozie but the stand out tracks are the first one All my Life, which is the single and the absolutely beautiful Tired of you, which is so sad and lonely and haunting. Almost like a cowboy song, almost like the song you'd expect to hear at the end of the credits in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid when the drummer and Robert Redford and Dave Grohl get shot by the Bolivian Army and it's all sad but kind of fitting and resolved. And at least they went out fighting. There's even this bit in the choruses where they do this Def Leppard guitar drone thing which is cool.

The rest of the songs are great too. I could point out the other good ones, but the rest would get jealous. Just go to the record store and listen for a bit and then buy it because it's cool. Almost epic cool. Not too epic though. Not like Def Leppard - just that one bit in Tired of You.

Comes in black or white.

Foo Power!
