Columbia Bones:
   Summary:
Fitting tribute to American punk Reviewed
By: Sparticus
I'm way too young to remember the Ramones properly and so too apparently, is the spell checker, so it's just given them a red wavy underline. According to the spell checker 'Ramones' is not allowed because it's naughty - which is perhaps the most fitting tribute Microsoft could have come up with. In fact the red wavy line is a better tribute than track four, which is Metallica's version of 53rd & 3rd, and is crap. But apart from that, this album fucking rocks. As often happens when famous artists get to do something fun instead of trying to please a record company, the results are spectacular.
Here's a song by song breakdown of what you get for your bucks, pounds, Euros or whatever
Havana Affair - The Red Hot Chili Peppers: After some lacklustre stuff on their last album the Chilis sound happy, fresh and good
Blitzkreig Bop - Performed by Rob Zombie: Rob Zombie isn't supposed to be cool, but this song is It's a bit of a standout - but he did produce the album with Johnny Ramone, so he probably had more time to do stuff than the others
I believe in Miracles -Eddie Vedder with Zeke: Typical Eddie Vedder whinging, skip this one
53rd & 3rd - Performed by Metallica: Pretty lame actually, sounds like they didn't try too hard
Beat on the Beat - U2: U2 haven't done anything wrong ever and aren't about to start now are they
Do you Remember Rock and Roll Radio -KISS: This absolutely kicks ass. KISS rock.
The KKK took my baby away -Marilyn Manson - Pretty boring actually, if you want a good Marilyn Manson cover listen to 'I put a spell on you' from the Lost Highway soundtrack
I just Wanna Have Something to Do -Garbage: OK, but a bit of a yawn
Outsider -Green Day: Green Day are the new American Punk, or were anyway, and they have more melody than the Ramones and are probably easier to listen to, so their version of this straightforward song sounds appropriate, but lacking in something. It sounds like something they left off Dookie
Something to Believe in -The Pretenders: Slow and cool - pretenders style. Exactly what you'd expect
Sheena is a Punk Rocker - Rancid: You can almost hear the ghosts on this.
I wanna be your boyfriend - Pete Yorn: Nice version, nothing to write home about though
I wanna be sedated - The Offspring: Has absolutely nothing on the original, but it's OK. Nice to hear from The Offspring again.
Here today, gone tomorrow - Rooney: The Ramones were never this pretty, but this is a great track.
Return of Jackie and Judy - Tom Waits: This is so dirty you'll find yourself looking for the nearest firehose and some non-moisturising soap - awesome. In fact, they should have left it here rather than throw in the crappy 'limited edition' bonus tracks. Who are they fooling anyway. As Jerry Seinfeld once said, this thing is only limited to the number they can sell.
If you like the Ramones, or you haven't forgiven the Red Hot Chili Peppers for By The Way, buy this and be at peace.
