Jeff Buckley - Live at Sin-e

Artist: Jeff Buckley
Album Title: Live at Sin-e
Label: Columbia
Bones:
Summary: Cafi days for Mr Buckley
Reviewed By: Stuart 'Record Store Guy' McPhee

Jeff Buckley's recordings at the New York Cafi Sin-e, resonates the same feelings as the Beatles at the Cavern Club or 50 Cent's illegal mix tapes while he was still dealing crack. Okay possibly not the last example but what this recording captures is an artist saying goodbye to one part of his musical life and beginning the first steps in a brilliant but tragically short professional career.

The original release was in fact his debut for Columbia, a four track E.P. to showcase Buckley's live talents. The new version expands on the original just a wee bit (2 = hours over 2 Discs and a DVD), exposing everything from the sessions from false starts to hilarious between song banter that, if all else failed, could secure him a spot on the stand up circuit. It's an insight into a man who on the surface looked very serious but had such a sense of humour and warmth that it hurts even more that he isn't around.

The first disc begins with a breathtaking a cappella version of 'Be Your Husband' that will have you gob smacked by the power and range in his voice. It sets the standard for the rest of the album as Buckley mixes early versions of songs from his debut LP Grace with favourite covers by everyone from Led Zeppelin to Nina Simone.

His unique voice allowed him to take other's songs and make them his own. Buckley's interpretations of Dylan's 'Just Like A Woman' and Van Morrison's 'Sweet Thing' are near ethereal while his take on Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' is just as good as the version released on Grace.

At 2 = hours, Live at Sin-e will test the patience of a casual fan of Buckley's work and therefore may want to seek out the original E.P. Those of you willing to experience a night with Jeff at Sin-e, this is the closest you are going to get, and for that we must be grateful. Jeff's mother, Mary Guibert, has done an exceptional job at controlling the releases of his material and this document is all class.
