Many people have been asking the same question for a number of years. Hooba What? The Californian quartet are made up of Vocalist Douglas Robb, Dan Estrin (Guitar) Markku Lappalainen (Bass) and Chris Hesse (Drums). Although the weird name does not give them much credibility they sure blow most people out of the water. For the people who still don't know what I'm talking about, this is the band's second major release. The new album 'The Reason' takes off where their self titled last album finished. And let me tell you all, it kicks off with a BANG!!!!! Touring with the like of Incubus and Jay Z have helped them be recognised by their music, not by the weird ass name. What were they thinking, Really?
The first song 'Same Direction' really sets the tone for the album, with its strong drumming and guitar work, which work well with Robb's (sure to have the pussiest name in Rock for a lead singer) vocals. Estrin's work has really made everyone aware that he is an eighties child of rock with his sensually smooth beats that successfully combine strong power chords. This really helps the album run smoothly from one song to the other without getting annoying or like many rock albums too loud (if there is such a thing).
Hoobastank have had some recent success with the title track, 'The Reason'. This song really infuses it messages into our hearts with its romantic dribble, which I found to be quiet a gem in the album. Who wouldn't like their loved one proclaiming their love by singing: ''I've found a reason for me, to changed who I used to be/a reason to start over new. And the reason is you.'' (Excuse me while I wipe my tears)
Robb's Lyrics are very meaningful and have a lot of purpose. Throughout the album the main theme is love and or love lost, this will depend on your interpretation. 'What Happened To Us' starts off with a sad bass drum, which sets a mood for the broken heart in all of us: "What happened to us? We used to be so perfect, now were lost and lonely". The simplicity and honesty of Robb's lyrics really touch the hopeless romantic in all of us.
This album is Hoobastank's best by far. The romantic and deeply personal lyrics appeal to many if not all of us and with its infused rock makes it great to listen to. The album is solid throughout; the vibe is steady which makes it easy to listen to. There is no doubt that Hoobastank have produced a great album, the type of album that could catapult them into household name status. For those fans that are searching for 'Crawling in the Dark part 2' can rest assure that they will not be disappointed. The simplicity of the lyrics and the strength of the guitar work make this a ballsy album.
