Muse - Absolution Review

Artist: Muse
Album Title: Absolution
Label: Warner
Bones:
Summary: A slight chance of doom heading our way perhaps?
Reviewed By: Lovos de Lover

Although nearly unknown to the mass Australian public
until recently (unless you listen to Triple J
religiously), the band has been around for a number of
years. The three-piece band consists of Matthew
Bellamy (vocals, Guitars and Keyboards), Chris
Wolstenholme (Bass and Backing Vocals) and Dominic
Howard (Drums and Percussion). Their debut album
'Showbiz' was released back in 1999. 2001 bought about
their second helping called 'Origin of Symmetry'. So
you may be wondering why in the hell haven't you heard
of them?

The band waited for the right time to released the
third album and I must say they did well. The first
and second were only released as imports to the U. S
public so only a select few got to experience it.
However, the third album (Absolution), in the first
week went to top five in just about every country in
Europe. The first two releases helped the band get a
decent fan base in Europe, to get them heard to the
mass public in other continents including the U.S and
Australia. Whilst maintaining they are only in it for
the music. Like fame and fortune aren't pleasurable
attributes of been rock stars. (Lets not kid
ourselves)

'Falling away with you' is one of the gems on the
album. It starts as a slow ballad, then after the
first chorus it speeds up, leading into a very honest
account of sad breakup. The song really touches if you
have had the same experience, you might love the
person but for some reason it just never works.
Falling Away With You is wordplay: the opposite of
falling in love with you. Like the song says 'all of
the love we threw away/all of the hopes we cherish
fade. Making the same mistakes again.' (Sad but true).
However on lighter side of the song, the percussion
really works well adding a touch of tenderness to what
might seem an over emotional song.

The interestingly named song Stockholm Syndrome,
what can I say, ITS GOLD I TELL YOU. , It is solid
rock; from the start it hits you with strong guitar
riffs that melts your face. If you will, the reality
is that the Stockholm syndrome is an actual mental
illness, which adds to the WROK! For a bit of a
history lesson, Stockholm syndrome was originally used
to describe the relation ship between hostages and
their captors, after bonding with one another the
hostages saw the captors as protectors. (I can see the
headlines now: David Hicks in Love with Bush
AdministrationI think NOT!).

Absolution has a range of different styles of music
and very difficult to put them in one category. One
song to the next brings a side of the band many didn't
know existed. They touch styles such as Classical all
the way to just plain rock. Ballamy's vocals are
magnificent throughout; his style suits just about any
type of background music. Howard's percussion is
second to none to say the least. If you wanted to buy
one original album this year this is your ticket to
ride. This can be a very strong attribute that may
allow the band to grow from this album more so than
their last helpings.
