 Summary:
Their skills make any muso feel inadequate! Reviewed
By: Deejay
The album starts out with the feel good title track. subtle rythyms from Carter Beauford create a jazzy, head nodding mood to the song. throughout the album the talent and skill produced by Beauford will never cease to amaze In my opinion, he is one of the greatest drummers around.
Dave Mathews has a distinct and unique lyrical style that is poetic, deep and emotionly stirring and with sits perfectly with the different timings of each song. the second track "Grey Street" is a climbing melody over a unforgettable main hook. The song gradually climbs with emotion with each chorus becoming longer and finally ending with Mathews' almost scat-like lyrics becoming lost in the array of instruments.
The album does not have a section you skip every time you play it or a song you've heard too much but it does slow down a touch before the 8th track "Kit Kat Jam". KKJam is a completly live studio recording that could and should be worthy of DVD release, because of unbelievably great sound captured by the bands engineer in an on the spot, one take situation. The musical arrangment by Mathews on all tracks is unprecedented and the complex nature of his songwriting make this an album for real music lovers and musicians alike.
My guess is that the DMB will be remembered in the same manner as Pink Floyd and the likes because of their complex music that can only be fully appreciated by those with the love for music that goes beyond channel V or MTV.
All in all, DMB fans could argue for a lifetime after a few pints over the all-time best DMB album but I would definatley have to give "Busted Stuff" a few votes. Get it, Listen to it on a good stereo or headphones, and then listen to again and again. its one of those albums that get better each time you put it on, and thats when you know its gold.
