Solid Debut from H Pisces Reviewed

Well, where to begin on this one. The start's usually a good place. And that's a new dawn, especially when a band like H Pisces comes along. At first listen, the bunky funkage accompanying the first track 'Waste Some Time' is almost reminiscent of Prince, then I think Oingo Boingo, then I think UK bands we all love. Then I realize that they're from the UK. Go figure.
Rebellious lyrics, occasionally suggestive notions flying through the ether at my tender nubile ears as I try to inwardly digest 'Dream Away', which would appear to be a blatant dig at drug culture. And then I switch off. But in a good way. This is ethereal power pop. It must be because it flies through the ether. Then 'Will You?' hits me. I stop to reflect upon this cover tune for a second. And yes, it is still as haunting as the cult Hazel O'Connor film, 'Breaking Glass' from which it comes. Then I feel surprised these guys even know who she is.
Even so, the omission of the Tony Visconti strings in favor of a flamenco guitar and harmonica with stacks of harmonies does tend to leave one a little 'gobsmacked', as they say in London. It's a track you could listen to more than once at first glance. And that I find a little rare. Having said this, I didn't care much for 'So Strange' although it was catchy, so just as well the final cut 'Here Comes the Rain' made up for it. This is a power ballad with a twist. The singer's voice sounds almost virginal on this one. So if you're into that, that's cool too.
This is an independent release on SKS Music and I noticed it for sale in Tower Records, amongst other places. I don't know much about music but I know what I like. And H Pisces has it.
