Various - Rough Guide To African Rap Review

Summary: Get back to ya roots...

This album is a keeper as it's choc full of authentic african independant releases. The majority of the artists are from the South African region I believe.

You will find some awesome vocal harmony's fused with hip hop beats and listen out for the real lion sounds on track 3. This album is a cross breed of dirrrrrty underground hip hop, reggae, weird 80's synths, and African languages. At times it has a very island, beaches and coconut milk cocktails feel, then it'll do a backflip to a bottom heavy, politically inspired downer, to ruin the mood.

The Rough Guide has done a great job compiling this auditory insight into a different musical culture. In summary, this is a samplers dream, a way of getting some cultural inspiration and full of those weird/cool effects people got out of atari synths and vintage sequencers. If nothing else it'll put one more notch in your musical knowledge belt.
