When Punk Rock met Ska their greatness was named The Flatliners Reviewed
By: Tony The Leper
Exploding out of Richmond Hill, Canada, The Flatliners are bound for a rapid climb up the rungs of the punk world ladder thanks to their unique mix of punk rock and ska coming together to form compilations like their latest CD Destroy To Create. In a genre where bands seem to blend together and then rise up and melt away a year later, The Flatliners have managed, as often stated, to pull off their own powerful sound creating fast-paced anthemic punk rock songs with intense ska undertones. It is incredibly rare to come across a self-produced, label free CD that is fantastic from start to finish. Most CD's put out by the unsigned should really only be EP's, however this CD is solid from start to finish. When trying to select songs for the download section I ended up simply listing the ones available on the site, it was just too difficult to pick. While some of my favorites are not available on the site to sample, I can assure you the CD is worth picking up to hear them. With the CD cleanly recorded and produced, songs like Bad News, Do or Die and Gullible are among my favorite songs of the year. With Chris Cresswell's natural punk vocal range convincing you The Flatliners have been smoking three packs a day and living off the bottle for the last few decades, the band members young ages are an encouraging surprise promising years of great music to come. Driven by Cresswell's incredible voice and supported by powerful guitar rifts and a punk rock air the music lacks the lyrical quirkiness of today's ska scene and instead only has the feel of a ska influence musically, while taking a more hard-line punk approach lyrically. Having hit the stage with such names such as The Suicide Machines, Against All Authority, The Planet Smashers, Big D and the Kids Table, Murphy's Law, The Code, and Streetlight Manifesto you can be promised the only direction The Flatliners are going is up. Also for any Toronto area folks, The Flatliners made the Edgefest bill this year and will be playing. This is a CD you need if you are even mildly into punk or ska music, and hell, its paid for in CANADIAN dollars, that means it costs no more than 3 dollars for you American viewers. Order away you cheap bastards.
