Driving around (in my sister's car of all things) I overhead a new song on a commercial radio station called 'Bad Day' (The song was called 'Bad Day' not the station). Due to the station's complete lack of back announcing I assumed it was the next single from Aussie 'Popstars' winner Kayne Taylor (who to this day still hasn't released his debut album, 18 months after winning the TV competition).
As it turns out, the song is from yet another pop/rock singer from North America that they seem to churn out every few weeks. Canuck Daniel Powter's debut album, imaginatively titled 'Daniel Powter', contains said song and 9 others. Sadly that is all that can be said about it without this turning into an absolute bollocking of a review.
But then again, this is Ear Medicine so here goes: How substandard Maroon 5 style albums can flood the airwaves while people like Robbie Williams can't do any business in America is totally beyond me. Quite frankly it is a waste of a good recording contract. I really hope this Powter lad can prove me wrong but when was the last time an artist of this ilk had a decent career? Sadly Powter has all the hallmarks of fellow Canadian Tal Bachman and we all know how healthy his discography is looking of late.
I shouldn't focus on the negatives though. It should be applauded that a man like Powter has triumphed over adversity with dyslexia to write his own songs and release them through a major label. Not many people (myself included) can claim that achievement.
