No one tackled 'Chocolate Cake'? Reviewed

It has been well documented (on this site at least) my obsession with the Brothers Finn. So who better to gaze over this tribute album with a stern whip and a penchant for fan boy style ranting?
Having never taken a huge interest in covers albums it felt appropriate to at least open my mind to the different interpretations contained within. This particular release is an all-female tribute and as such allows you to revisit songs from an alternate point of view.
Some artists have gone and changed lyrics to suit their gender but maybe it is a GUY thing that I enjoyed the songs that remain untouched. Sue me if I think certain things when Clare Bowditch sings "I'm really close tonight and I feel like I'm moving inside her". Regardless of my lustful thoughts the version is a cracker.
Also worth a thumbs up or two is Amiel's dance reworking of the Split Enz classic 'One Step Ahead' (Note to DJ Sammy: This is how it is done you fucking twat) and Little Birdy's courageous attempt at 'Six Months In A Leaky Boat'. Personal highlight has to be Stellar*'s stunning take on Tim Finn's under appreciated solo track 'Persuasion'.
Elsewhere though, it is more like "Thanks for coming ladies. We appreciate the fact you like the Finns but you must stop what you're doing." If they aren't doing a straight one for one version (Kasey Chambers' nice but unnecessary 'Better Be Home Soon') they are destroying what was once beautiful. Despite Missy Higgins being my secret crush (to paraphrase Biff Tannen: "I'm going to marry you some day Missy!") I could have done without her singing 'Stuff And Nonsense'.
The song, which probably has the biggest potential of any of the tracks, is Brooke Fraser's rendition of 'Distant Sun'. Sadly though her religious affiliations have obviously prevented her from uttering the important line: "Like a Christian fearing vengeance from above." Instead there is a weird gap in the song and as a result it just sounds silly. Just say the freaking line Fraser!
Maybe this whole review would have been better handled by someone who was less subjective then myself.
