 Summary:
Same Dust means good Dust Reviewed
By: Chad Bosworth
To put it bluntly, most of the artists on the Roadrunner label perform the kind of music that likely limits the number of invitations they'd receive to church picnics. It's pretty strictly a metal thing. Sevendust, however, don't always sit so comfortably under this umbrella.
Formed in 1995, this is Sevendust's first album away from TVT records, after signing to a new label and replacing former guitarist Clint Lowery. The formula remains the same: familiar heavy metal littered with intense drums and rhythm, fierce guitar riffs and vocals that rollercoaster from growl to purr - sometimes instantly.
Frontman Lajon Witherspoon has always been the striking point of Sevendust's popularity. Sure, the band makes great heavy metal music - but Witherspoon's vocals deliver the counter balance that takes it somewhere beyond, and always has.
Next is no different. In some ways the overall sound is slightly heavier than some previous efforts, but the delicate balance remains, and fans won't be disappointed. The intensity is apparent from track one, "Hero" which serves well as an "example track" of the Sevendust sound. Awesome stuff. "See and Believe" and "Never" also stand out as highlights in an already-impressive set. The two or so ballads here, such as "Shadows in Red", are, as usual, done beautifully and will probably help round out the next acoustic collection.
Overall, the album isn't going to reel in new fans who have heard what Sevendust do before, nor is it going to re-invent Heavy Rock music as we know it. It is, however, going to deliver more of the quality Alternative Metal the fans crave, and if you're into the 'dust - you wouldn't have it any other way.
