Sonically sexy aural copulation Reviewed

Equal Vision records would like to introduce you to the art of being frantic. With their sophomore full-length album Doppelgdnger, Washington three-piece The Fall of Troy is certainly a fast-rocking gifthorse you should look in the mouth. At some point heartfelt Long Island heroes On the Might of Princes and the ever-frantic Blood Brothers stewed in a pot together with a sprinkling of spacy and spazzed-out, pop punk, and metal spices. Add a dash of prog-rock seasoning and we have ambrosia for the gods.
The album begins with the appropriately named tracks, "I Just Got This Symphony Goin'" and "Act One, Scene One". The Fall of Troy must have had no problem getting the symphony up and running as these tracks kick start the aural goodness. With lyrics like "Open wide default.htm space and time distort the mind" it's hard not to start getting excited. Perhaps I'm just a softie for interstellar wordplay, but this band shows that you can have awesome lyrics without having to be as obscure as The Mars Volta.
Musically, the songs do not disappoint with their heavy interludes and twangy, heartfelt slowdowns. You can expect guitar solos and a firm grasp of how to use effects, courtesy of the band's very own sound-tech. Don't be surprised when lead singer/guitarist Thomas Erak soothes your ears with his ever-changing singing right before he barrages you with a very unique shriek.
It becomes apparent that these two tracks are no fluke as you continue through the album. From the slowdown singing section of "Tom Waits" at 1:23 to the stalkerish vocal freakout in "Macaulay McCulkin" to the oddly angular "breakdowns" in "The Hol[]y Tape", Equal Vision Records certainly had their eyes open enough to recognize this band's equivalence to steamy, passionate sex.
So for their sophomore release on Equal Vision, what do The Fall of Troy have in store? A concept album about a ghost ship with remade tracks from their self-released EP Ghostship Demo with each band member playing his own role in the story. If anyone can pull that off in 2006, it's these guys.
