Cranberries - To The Faithful Departed Review

Artist: Cranberries
Album Title: To The Faithful Departed
Label: Island Records
Bones:
Summary: Cure-All for any good mood
Reviewed By: Kate Jewett

Have you looked at the world lately and said to yourself "Oh, what a mess we've made?"  If so, then The Cranberries' third CD, "To The Faithful Departed" is for you.  It's one part rock, one part social injustice, and one part 'same old Cranberries.'

The first few tracks would be full of good rock, but they've already used these songs to death, especially "Free To Decide."  Once you hit the 5th track, "War Child," however, it's all new.  If you tried the all-synthesizer bands and said 'meh, not for me,' I reccomend all the rest of the Cranberries collection, just not this one.  "Bosnia," "War Child," the ever-popular "Zombie," "I Just Shot John Lennon," and "Electric Blue Eyes" all are about the nasty things that happen every day while the world turns the other way, and if you decided to spring for the full sessions CD and get some sweet bonus tracks, "God Be With You" is one of those, too.

They continued this trend slightly when cutting the next album, "Bury The Hatchet," but it didn't do as well as the others, so it's on the full sessions CD for "Bury The Hatchet."  Dolores haunts your mind with the words of "Will You Remember," reminding us that without the good times, it might as well have been nothing, and the dulcet tones of the synthesizer lull you into a quiet wooded grove of dancing lights, but all the words say something that makes that wooded grove turn into a run down carnival of fear, that you might forget.

If you try and like this CD, I recommend The Smiths, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and Simon and Garfunkel.  Keep an eye out for their stunning tribute to Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way," on the full sessions CD.
