Christophe Ernst & The Black Market Rhythm Co - Ain't For Sale EP Review

Artist: Christoper Ernst & The Blackmarket Rhythm Co.
Album Title: Ain't For Sale
Label: Independent
Bones:
Summary: You can't buy us off fools!
Reviewed By: 'Disco' Stu McPhee

When I eyed off the spine of the CD case, it looked like it said: "The Black Market Rhythm Co. ain't for sale".

Yeah! Damn the man, you can't buy us off you corporate pigs!

Okay I added that last bit and I now realise that 'Ain't For Sale' is the name of their new extended play but the point is this Gold Coast four piece are really hitting their straps. Quickly following last year's self titled debut/EP/mini-album (circle where appropriate), The Black Market Rhythm Co. come bearing more musical delights.

Fostering an even more mature sound than their earlier effort, Ain't For Sale is further proof that if you want to hear some of the best new music in Australia then the Gold Coast is where to find it.

As always the lads have a kaleidoscope of different sounds on offer, to ensure that their will be none of that pigeonhole nonsense going on. The title track is a sly attack at the cosmetics industry where lead singer Christopher Ernst (with a musical backing that doffs it's hat to 'Counting The Beat' by The Swingers) frankly tells a woman getting dolled up, "You'll never win over a real man's heart for he don't care."

'My Beautiful' is an old school R&B foot-stomper complete with handclaps and a nifty walking bass line. Once again proving his addition in the group is more than a handy one, Jake O'Brien's swirling trumpet rounds off a great song. Meanwhile, 'One Night Stand' is what you would expect if Sublime were from the 60s and not the mid-90s.

Finally, 'Unlucky Man' is what the Black Market Rhythm Co. seem to do best. Like 'True Love' and 'Shed A Tear' off the last release, Ernst's forlorn lyrics are backed tenderly by the rest of the group makes for melancholic listening. This time though 'Unlucky Man' could be their best tune of their burgeoning songbook.

At a jot over 12 minutes, The Black Market Rhythm Co. hand you their application for a shot at a major label. I suggest you give it due consideration.
