Get Off...to Prince once more Reviewed
By: 'Disco' Stu McPhee
Prince is back baby! Don't be fooled into his supposed return to form on 2004s Musicology because it was a false alarm. While no doubt an improvement on his last half dozen releases, Musicology never really contained what Prince is all about: great funky hooks andwellsex.
That's right, the man who became a Jehovah's Witness is once again getting his grind on. What's next? The Pope starts throwing condoms into the crowd in St. Peter's Square? Not likely, but let's not question his fudging of his faith and instead let us celebrate his glorious return to getting down.
Essentially 3121 (named after his rented pad in L.A.) makes out like the past 16 years never happened. Instead it is wall to wall with sleazy 80s guitar numbers and horny ballads ('Satisfied' will get the ladies in the mood) that will see early Prince fans digging out their Purple Rain T-Shirts from the back of the closet.
Jazzy opener and title track aside, musical gold comes thick and fast. 'Lolita' may have The Symbol abstaining from carnal knowledge with a minor ("U'll never make a cheater out of me") but it certainly doesn't stop him talking about what it would be like ("Imagine me on the tip of Ur tongue"). Coming across like Bob Dylan if he kicked out the jams, 'Fury' is Prince at his most anthemic with a guitar riff that will go down great live.
Elsewhere you can find some tasty delights. Drop the lights down low for the sensual 'Te Amo Corazon' that, musically, plays out like a Spanish version of 'Money Don't Matter 2 Night". Then you get a song like 'Love' with it's ridiculously catchy groove and all of a sudden the whitest men on the planet are dancing like Morris Day and Jerome!
Now if we can only get Michael Jackson to hook up with Quincy Jones again then it may be worth going to nightclubs again...
