Ana Popovic - Ana Live Review

Artist: Ana Popovic
Album Title: Ana!

Summary: Barnstorming Blues from the Balkans
Reviewed By: 'Disco' Stu McPhee

Those most people know me as a neat (ish) kind of guy, quite often my work space can resemble the office of Irwin 'Fletch' Fletcher. There will months old issues of local street press littered about because they contain an article I was meaning to read as well as CD-R's of albums given to me by the magazine I used to work for that are stacked precariously because I may need them for if I ever host a state function for the visiting German chancellor and I run out of beer coasters.

For some reason I still hold on to the flowery written press releases that I never read in the first place as if they will ever be a handy reference tool, put simply I need to clean up.

Amongst this I do have a legitimate inbox of items I either need to read, view or listen to that has fast become out of hand. Criminally, Ana Popovic's live DVD was one of them.

Hailing from the former Yugoslavia by way of The Netherlands, Popovic is an accomplished Blues guitarist with livewire stage presence that has a lot of people back in the U.S. (the home of Blues) starting to take notice.

Coming off looks wise as a Jennifer Grey type (in the intermediate years between Dirty Dancing and "It's Like, You Know"), Popovic certainly gets the male's attention but is able to land the knockout blow as soon as she starts playing.

Adding gravitas to the live performance is her killer backing band that are so white hot that even Popovic knows when to stand back and let them take over for a bit.

The whole group really connect on tracks like 'Comfort To The Soul', 'Sittin On Top Of The World' and the barnstorming finale of 'My Man/Long Lost Love"

The highlights for me though were her interpretation of Steely Dan's 'Night By Night' as well as her own 'Won't Let You Down' which showed she can throw down some slick jazz-pop as well as her bread and butter.

So this DVD proved two things: Ana Popovic is a real find and I really need to sort out my inbox quicker.
